Phil Jacobs is an English-born, Canadian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose musical journey began at age 13, the moment he first heard Eddie Van Halen. That spark led him to pick up his first electric guitar — a pink Fender Heavy Metal Strat — and set him on a lifelong path of sound, expression, and authenticity.
In high school, Phil received the Excellence in Music & Mathematics Award, recognizing both his musical ability and his academic strength. He later studied jazz trumpet at Concordia University, minoring in mathematics and physics.
Shortly after this time, he continued with religious studies and trained under the lead trumpet chair of The Phantom of the Opera (Toronto), gaining deep classical and jazz foundations that continue to influence his phrasing, tone, and melodic sensibilities.
Phil taught himself to sing in an unconventional way — through countless nights at karaoke clubs — discovering his voice at age 25. By his late 20s, he moved into full-time gigging as a solo acoustic performer, duet partner, and later frontman of a three-piece band formed at the request of a venue owner.
He performed extensively throughout Toronto, Northern Ontario, and into the U.S., building a reputation for heartfelt delivery, raw emotion, and musical versatility.
A serious health setback forced Phil into a long hiatus of more than 20 years. Now in his early 50s, he has returned to music with renewed passion, depth, and purpose — and an unmistakable sense of gratitude.
Since settling in the Chatham-Kent area, he has immersed himself in the local arts community through song circles and regular performances at the former Good Days Café, and now Crow City Coffee in Chatham.
In recent years, Phil has reignited his career with a powerful wave of momentum, performing at venues such as Cove’s Landing, Glass Town Brewery, The Garden On King, Sons of Kent, Roots & Revival Festival, Grog's Bar & Grill, Legion Br #243, Chuck's Roadhouse, Wild Wings Roadhouse, and JazzBah, along with numerous private events.
His solo act has flourished, and he is now assembling a new three-piece band focused on his original music — paired with familiar songs reimagined through his soulful, guitar-driven style.
His influences span decades and genres: Eddie Van Halen, Angus Young, Clark Terry, Clifford Brown, and many others who’ve shaped his eclectic approach to melody, tone, rhythm, and improvisation.
Phil is currently releasing a catalogue of original songs written and recorded over the past 25 years on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, and all major streaming platforms. His sound blends soulful storytelling, guitar-forward expression, and an unmistakable authenticity — the hallmark of an artist who has lived, learned, returned, and risen.
