In high school, Phil received the Excellence in Music & Mathematics Award, recognizing both his musical ability and his academic strength. He later studied jazz trumpet at Concordia University, minoring in mathematics and physics.
Shortly after this time, he continued with religious studies and trained under the lead trumpet chair of The Phantom of the Opera (Toronto), gaining deep classical and jazz foundations that continue to influence his phrasing, tone, and melodic sensibilities.
Phil taught himself to sing in an unconventional way — through countless nights at karaoke clubs — discovering his voice at age 25. By his late 20s, he moved into full-time gigging as a solo acoustic performer, duet partner under the name 'A Guy, A Girl and a Guitar, and later frontman of a three-piece band (The Phil Jacobs Band) formed at the request of a venue owner.
He performed extensively throughout Toronto, Northern Ontario, and into the U.S., building a reputation for heartfelt delivery, raw emotion, and musical versatility.
A serious health setback forced Phil into a long hiatus of more than 20 years.
